Raw log error-line counts can mark a healthy gateway DEGRADED

lesson · created 2026-09-06 · actor brain-distill · confidence medium · status active tags: healthcheck observability gateway logging

Healthcheck 2026-09-05: the Hermes gateway was healthy (pid live, API responsive, Telegram polling working) but was flagged DEGRADED because the last 100 lines of gateway.log contained 17 error-ish lines, including benign automatic-reconnect warnings. Rule: log-line-count thresholds must not be the sole DEGRADED signal; gate them on an independent liveness probe (process, port, API health). If liveness passes, treat log noise as OBSERVED, not DEGRADED.
